Drawing and Sketching for Teachers: Three five-hour workshops
This is an LAUSD Salary Point class
Also open to the general public. Everyone is welcome. Advanced registration is required.
WHAT WILL WE DO?
We will DRAW!
We will use everyday materials, like plain ol' printer paper, regular ball-point pens, ordinary pencils, and other easy-to-find things. We will also delve into fancier art materials and more sophisticated ways to make art, but the focus is on drawing and sketching with everyday materials that you already have in your classroom and your home.
We will be highly interactive. No tedious lectures or boring slideshows, no hideous edu-babble. You'll be drawing the whole time. Probably laughing a lot, too. Individually, in groups, and in all sorts of ways. We'll do fun drawing games, have a lot of time for making your own drawings in class, and of course Bartt will show you how to draw.
Bartt will demonstrate things like quick-sketching, how to make fast little idiosyncratic portraits that actually look like your model, doing a bit of still life, landscape, drawing from your imagination, drawing from photos, drawing from objects that are sitting in front of you, drawing with your eyes closed, drawing with your opposite hand, drawing upside-down, and drawing in 16,387 other ways.
Perhaps most importantly, we'll make a lot of mistakes. We'll get over the fear of making a crummy drawing, because everyone makes crummy drawings from time to time. We'll look at a bunch of really interesting artists from various cultures and time periods, and we'll look at artists that make art in ways OTHER than drawing. We'll explore how to use your newfound drawing passion in your classes, and in your regular life.
Educationally-speaking, it can be much easier to explain a concept via drawing, because it can be faster than writing or verbalizing. And stick figures can be pretty danged magical sometimes. We'll expore the importance of expressing a concept through art, even if you can't draw realistically. Look at Charlie Brown. He's just a circle and a couple of squiggles.
So essentially, this class is a way for you to experiment without pressure, make art without trepidation, and have fun earning a salary point.
This class is designed for absolute beginners, but experienced artists are also welcome. The class is about showing everyone how easy it is to start drawing, and how to incorporate art into their classes and their lives.
If you are clueless about art, this is your class.
If you can't draw, this is your class.
If you are afraid of drawing, this is your class.
If you're a fun person and you enjoy laughing, this is your class.
If you know about art and artists, this is your class.
If you are an experienced artists looking for a salary point, this is your class.
You'll learn a ton. You'll have fun.
